A sustainable greenhouse as a friend

The Botanical Museum of the University of Siena is one of the green lungs of the city: flowerbeds, ponds, groves, and rocky slopes where the plant cover has been managed and maintained since its origin in 1856.

It covers an area of 2.5 hectares accessible to citizens and tourists.

Within it, you'll find the Ancient Greenhouse, an 85-square-meter building, the oldest and of the greatest historical and architectural value: iron, yellow-blue stained glass, and a covering in cavernous limestone with three original caryatid columns supporting the terrace. The iron and stained glass structure is located on the land granted for use to the Botanical Garden of the University of Siena since its establishment in 1856 by the Academy of Fisiocritici.

Now, it is necessary to renew and create a new heating system, allowing the completion and creation of an environment truly suitable for the cultivation and exhibition of equatorial plants, increasing from the current 250 to 400 plants.

This place was created with the aim of exhibiting plants from tropical climates that were little known at the time of construction and are still on display today for the knowledge and curiosity of citizens, tourists and researchers.

Since its construction in the 19th century, however, continuous interventions have been necessary to keep it in step with the times and with new technologies, also to limit its environmental impact.

Project

The project idea involves the dismantling of the current plant and the construction of a new high-performance plant, which runs on renewable energy. A new low consumption and low temperature heating system with radiant floor panels will be installed, combined with an air-water heat pump generator powered by mains electricity. To integrate the generator, a solar thermal system is planned, which exploits solar energy for the production of hot water.

After the completion of the project, the Ancient Greenhouse will be returned to the public, and seasonal thematic exhibitions and conferences will be organized. This is to make known to all enthusiasts and the curious the exotic species preserved and also provide advice on the types of plants to cultivate, both outdoors and indoors.

The MPS Foundation, within the Let's Art! call, recognizing the importance of this project, will provide co-financing equal to 50% of the intervention's cost. However, only with the help of citizens, students, teachers, and businesses can we ensure the success of this operation and give the Ancient Greenhouse the opportunity to continue hosting unique plant specimens and carry out its activities at its best, becoming a green and sustainable greenhouse

Inn case the predetermined fundraising target is not reached, whatever has already been collected will still be allocated to the renovation and enhancement activities of the greenhouse itself.
