Within it, you'll find the Ancient Greenhouse, an 85-square-meter building, the oldest and of the greatest historical and architectural value: iron, yellow-blue stained glass, and a covering in cavernous limestone with three original caryatid columns supporting the terrace. The iron and stained glass structure is located on the land granted for use to the Botanical Garden of the University of Siena since its establishment in 1856 by the Academy of Fisiocritici.

Since its construction in the 19th century, however, continuous interventions have been necessary to keep it in step with the times and with new technologies, also to limit its environmental impact.

Project
The project idea involves the dismantling of the current plant and the construction of a new high-performance plant, which runs on renewable energy. A new low consumption and low temperature heating system with radiant floor panels will be installed, combined with an air-water heat pump generator powered by mains electricity. To integrate the generator, a solar thermal system is planned, which exploits solar energy for the production of hot water.

After the completion of the project, the Ancient Greenhouse will be returned to the public, and seasonal thematic exhibitions and conferences will be organized. This is to make known to all enthusiasts and the curious the exotic species preserved and also provide advice on the types of plants to cultivate, both outdoors and indoors.
